I am a designer by training & for a number of years did just that.

I hold a degree in design from the University of North Carolina, Raleigh and an MFA from Stanford University and was a visiting lecturer there for nearly a decade after graduating.

Over time, I found myself doing more managing than designing so I began the journey back
toward the arts.

Encouraged by a designer wife, Jane G. Derby - a  professional photographer daughter (NYC),
Erin Derby - and cinematography student (SVA), Dan Derby III - it seemed like I was rejoing a family business.

In addition to photography, I write stories on a variety of subjects for a variety of clients (notes below).

However, my wedding work is the purest form of story

Writing - some background

When there is time and opportunity, I write.   Sometimes for magazines & newspapers.  Many times for on-line publications.

In the popular press I write about people, their homes, jobs, hobbies
& passions. I have been published in travel & 'shelter' magazines
as well as newspapers (Yankee, Better Homes & Gardens).

In the business press, I have done features on operations management & technology mostly in trade magazines, a fallout from my hi-tech career.

For fun, I also write about technology & it's social impact and have published in places  such as Strange Horizons, Renaissance Magazine.  Some of this has evolved into a talk I call "Stuff - simple things that changed the world."

Some samples of are here (warning, some are quite ancient).
